The Power of Protection – A Real Life Example

Critical illness cover

We have a client PM and his wife FM and on 18th January 2019 he took out decreasing life and level term critical illness cover for him and his partner so that if either of them died or suffered a critical illness they would receive compensation. The decreasing amount matched their mortgage of around £130,000 but because their budget was limited, they restricted themselves to a lump sum of £50,000 in case of critical illness.

In December 2024 the optician flagged up an issue with pressure behind PM’s eyes and this lead to the discovery of a benign brain tumour called a Schwannoma. He needs 2 operations to remove it and has undergone one of them.

The critical illness policy was coming up for renewal and after checking with the provider, I informed PM that he would be able to make a claim under the policy and provided him with the correct telephone number and policy reference to make things easier for him to begin the process. He made the call and his claim for a lump sum payout of £50,000 is in progress.

PM is off work at present. He cannot drive and has episodes where his brain doesn’t work very well. He was delighted to be informed that he will be able to claim under the policy and no doubt the payment will relieve the financial pressure and worries on him and his wife.

Nobody is immune from serious illness. Human beings suffer from compartmental syndrome so that we don’t believe anything bad can ever happen to us. This is a sobering tale of how things can happen to you at any time. Get some cover in place to match your budget.
